Grand Opening of the “Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners”

The Sterling Seacrest team was on hand this month as the City of Peachtree Corners (just north of Atlanta) hosted the opening of the ‘Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners’ as part of the Smart City Expo in Atlanta. The Curiosity Lab is the first smart city living laboratory of its kind in the U.S.

The City of Peachtree Corners worked directly with our team to create an insurance program that encompassed the unique nature and innovation of this project. Due to the involvement of multiple high-profile partners, it was imperative for the insurance program to meet their specific requirements. We teamed with insurance industry experts and the City of Peachtree Corners’ leadership team to create a program that anticipates all of the variables at play, including cyber security and the autonomous vehicle exposures.

Insuring autonomous vehicles while being tested among commuter traffic is a concept that’s new in the industry. As with other types of emerging risk, the lack of historical data presents a unique challenge during the evaluation and underwriting process. Traditional and existing policies written for municipalities don’t take into account a city owning and operating this kind of testing facility.

The Curiosity Lab launch event also featured a number of demonstrations, highlighting 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. One of the technologies demonstrated was “Olli,” an autonomous vehicle that will be testing there.

As the largest privately owned insurance brokerage firm in the state with an office just around the corner from the Curiosity Lab, we are very proud to have played a role in helping bring this innovative facility to Georgia.
